Earning an invitation to the Big 12 — a lucrative Power 5 conference — would result in an unprecedented revenue stream for the University of Memphis. The Tiger athletic department would be in position to receive annual shares of more than $30 million from its portion of the Big 12’s television and postseason money, roughly 10 times more than the school receives as a member of the American Athletic Conference, a non-Power 5 league.
